A few years ago I was asked to photograph this expectant couple. I of course took the posed shot they wanted, but I also took a number of "warm up" shots (for setting exposure, etc.). It was these candid, unposed shots that interested me, because they portrayed the couple as they really were. She was flirting with him as he worried about the coming child. He responded tenderly to her. Then she drifted into that thousand mile gaze as she worried about the delivery ahead. Meanwhile he shot me his very protective look. These images are among my favorite portraits -- very real moments in the lives of two people I care about. The complete series is shown below. (Canon EOS 10D, 17-40mm f/4 L at 19mm, f/5.6, 1/60 sec, Canon 550EX fill flash.)
