At a dental school class reunion I was hired to photograph, I had the pleasure of a concert by some of the other hired help -- a barbershop quartet by the name of Riversong, based in Kilmarnock, Viriginia. (They're quite good, and you can hire them here!) Because of the high contrast between the bright background and the shadowy foreground, I had to use fill flash. As I was tweaking the settings, I was delighted by the surreal lighting effect I had created, as my "fill" became more of a "key" light for the quartet. The effect was accentuated by the relatively clear blue sky and the wide angle lens I was using.

I think this surrealistic photo works on several levels. The elements of the photo are extremely simple and familiar, yet the lighting is bizarre and seemingly directionless. The most striking aspect of the photo, to me, is its stillness and silence. I cannot help but "hear" a chord in my head from the bold visual impression, but the sound just isn't there. I suppose that forces me to think about the photo, which is interesting in itself. What I feel I've captured is a small slice of Americana. (Canon EOS 10D, 17-40 mm f/4L at 17 mm, f/13, 1/200 sec, strong on-shoe fill from 550-EX.)
